Your pitch is not just what you say
Most senior professionals think a "pitch" is a rehearsed answer to "so, what do you do?" It isn't. Your pitch is the full-body impression you leave in a stakeholder's mind — before you speak, while you speak, and long after you've left the room.
We map it across 11 factors, grouped into four families that answer the three questions every senior person is silently asking about you:
- Can I trust you?
- Can I relate to you?
- Can you help me?
1. What people notice first — your first impression
Appearance, Energy, Presence. These three set the room before you open your mouth. Appearance is the visual story you tell — grooming, posture, what you chose to wear and why. Energy is the vitality you bring; low-energy competence still reads as low-competence. Presence is whether you're actually in the moment, or already thinking about your next meeting. You get seconds to influence how people see you. Use them on purpose.
2. How people understand you — your message impact
Tone of Voice, Clarity, Articulation, Relevance. The right message, delivered flatly, doesn't land. Tone carries the emotion behind your words. Clarity means a stranger can repeat what you do in a single sentence. Articulation is confident, structured expression — no filler, no hedging. Relevance is the discipline of framing what you do in terms of what they care about. Corporate women often over-index on being accurate, and under-index on being understood.
3. The impression that lasts — your memorability
Storytelling and Tone of Voice. After you leave the room, what remains is rarely the data. It's the story. A specific customer you turned around. The quarter you rebuilt the team. The moment you said no to the deal. Stories are portable — they get retold in rooms you're not in. That is how sponsorship happens.
4. Why people trust you — trust & connection
Credibility, Listening, Authenticity. Credibility is the quiet weight of your track record — do people trust your expertise? Listening is whether the person in front of you feels genuinely heard, not just waited-on-until-you-speak. Authenticity is whether you come across the same in the boardroom, in the elevator, and on LinkedIn. Inconsistency is the fastest way to leak trust you spent years building.
Why we start here
Almost every stalled career I've seen in the last decade wasn't stalled on capability. It was stalled on pitch — on how the person was being perceived, remembered, and talked about when they weren't in the room. That's an invisible ceiling, and it's the first one we lift together in the AWE program.
We take each of the 11 factors, hold up the mirror, and get honest — with feedback from peers who have no reason to flatter and every reason to help you rise. That's the point of a club of 9. And of 40.
